Psychotherapie met tweetalige cliënten

Abstract

‘Het is (...) het verlies van de taal waarin men leefde en dacht en die men nooit zal kunnen vervangen door een andere, ondanks alle pogingen zich erin in te leven’ (Sigmund Freud in ballingschap aan Ferdinand de Saussure; geciteerd in Gay, 1988, p. 571).

In psychotherapie met tweetalige cliënten heeft code-switching (overschakelen op de tweede taal) talige en therapeutische gevolgen. Er kunnen zich taaltechnische moeilijkheden voordoen op het gebied van fonologie, woord- en taalgebruik. Daarnaast kan het nieuw verworven taalsysteem fungeren als een controlemechanisme en/of als een nieuw referentiekader voor het zelf. Deze functies kunnen tot gevolg hebben dat code-switching de toegang tot taalafhankelijke ervaringen belemmert. Psychotherapie in de tweede taal kan voor de behandelaar beperkingen en mogelijkheden creëren op het gebied van overdracht, tegenoverdracht en techniek.
