Samenvatting

De oudere volwassene wordt beschouwd als een biologisch volwassen individu met structurele en functionele gewrichtsveranderingen ten gevolge van de leeftijd. Bindweefselveranderingen spelen een essentiële rol in het ontstaan van deze functiestoornissen. Naast het normale verouderingsproces zullen de voordien gedane arbeid en sport, eerder doorgemaakte letsels en houdingsgewoonten een rol spelen in het ontstaan van functiestoornissen bij ouderen. Omdat de combinatie van deze factoren voor elke oudere verschilt, is de verscheidenheid in het klinisch beeld waarmee een oudere zich presenteert ook groot. Comorbiditeiten zoals osteoartrose en diabetes mellitus zullen een bijkomende invloed hebben. Oefenprogramma’s zijn meestal multifactoriële interventies en blijken veelbelovend te zijn met betrekking tot de algemene mobiliteit. Het includeren van elementen van stappen/lopen, krachttraining en flexibiliteit binnen één en dezelfde interventie blijkt een gunstige invloed te hebben op de algemene mobiliteit. Grote methodologische verschillen maken het onmogelijk conclusies te trekken over welke component het beste resultaat heeft.
