EMDR-behandeling bij oorlogsveteranen

Samenvatting

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is een bewezen effectieve behandeling voor posttraumatische stressstoornis (PTSS). De literatuur over de werkzaamheid van EMDR bij complexere vormen van PTSS is echter minder eenduidig. Er is ook weinig bekend over de werkzaamheid van EMDR bij oorlogsveteranen die tijdens hun missie in oorlogsgebieden getraumatiseerd raakten. In een door de auteurs uitgevoerd explorerend onderzoek werden veranderingen in de intensiviteit en de spanning van het traumatisch beeld gedurende EMDR-behandeling bij getraumatiseerde veteranen vergeleken met veranderingen in het algehele klachtenbeeld (de algehele lijdensdruk). De bevindingen suggereren enerzijds dat er sprake is van een significante vermindering in de gerapporteerde subjectieve lijdensdruk van traumatische beelden na EMDR-behandeling, anderzijds dat de ernst van gerapporteerde algehele psychische klachten niet afneemt. De bevindingen worden bediscussieerd in het licht van hun klinische betekenis.
