Patiënten met een ernstige psychiatrische aandoening (EPA) hebben een sterk verkorte levensverwachting, wat vooral te wijten is aan een relatief hoge cardiovasculaire mortaliteit. Het is daarom aan te bevelen EPA als aparte risicofactor op te nemen in de NHG-Standaard Cardiovasculair risicomanagement, naast de twee reeds bestaande indicaties diabetes mellitus en reumatoïde artritis. Net als bij deze twee aandoeningen is het cardiovasculair risico van een EPA in te schatten door bij de kalenderleeftijd vijftien jaar op te tellen. Cardiovasculair risicomanagement bij EPA kan eenvoudiger, goedkoper en doeltreffender worden wanneer dat gebeurt door een daartoe geschoold psychiatrisch verpleegkundige of verpleegkundig specialist binnen een FACT-team. Deze teams zijn bovendien goed in staat problemen rond de therapietrouw bij EPA-patiënten adequaat te ondervangen.
