16. Leven na hersenletsel: veranderingen en hun betekenis

Samenvatting

Een beroerte, ook wel een cerebrovasculair accident (cva) genoemd, is na hartaandoeningen en kanker de derde doodsoorzaak en de meest frequente oorzaak van ernstige beperkingen (Bonita 1988; Khaw 1996). Primaire preventie lijkt nog steeds het belangrijkste middel te zijn om de effecten van een beroerte te reduceren, maar dat is helaas niet voor alle risicofactoren mogelijk. De laatste jaren wordt er steeds meer onderzoek gedaan naar de effecten van restauratieve farmacologische interventies met ‘neuroprotectives’. Hoewel de mogelijkheden veelbelovend lijken, zijn de concrete resultaten tot nu toe teleurstellend (James 1997). Dit betekent dat, na de acute medische zorg, patiënten en hun familie dikwijls worden geconfronteerd met een complexe mengeling van sensomotorische, cognitieve en gedragsmatige problemen.
