Inzicht in emoties bij kinderen met aan autisme verwante stoornissen

Is de ‘mindblindness’-hypothese nog houdbaar

semenvatting

Kinderen met autisme zouden slechte ‘mindreaders’ zijn: zij onderkennen niet of nauwelijks dat iemands emotionele reacties voortkomen uit diens beleving van de werkelijkheid en niet door de realiteit zelf worden bepaald. Zoals deze ‘mindblindness’-hypothese zou voorspellen, refereren hoogfunctionerende kinderen met autisme in ons onderzoek minder aan ‘mental states’ ter verklaring van prototypische emoties dan zich normaal ontwikkelende zesjarigen. Echter, ter verklaring van atypische emoties presteren zij gelijk aan zich normaal ontwikkelende tienjarigen. Hieruit blijkt dat kinderen met autisme wel degelijk een ‘mindreading’ capaciteit bezitten, maar dat zij deze anders gebruiken dan zich normaal ontwikkelende kinderen. In dit artikel wordt een alternatieve verklaring voor de gevonden resultaten besproken.
