Samenvatting

De diagnostiek en behandeling van infecties en ontstekingen maken een belangrijk deel uit van de dagelijkse klinische en poliklinische praktijk. Dit hangt samen met de toenemende vergrijzing, een stijging van het aantal patiënten met een suboptimaal functionerend immuunsysteem (bijvoorbeeld na chemotherapie of ten gevolge van afstotingsremmende medicijnen na een orgaantransplantatie) en een toenemende resistentie tegen antibiotica.
