Het adolescentenbrein: inzichten in risicovol gedrag in de adolescentie uit de cognitieve neurowetenschappen

Samenvatting

De adolescentie is een fascinerende levensfase. In een relatief korte periode, ongeveer tussen het tiende en twintigste levensjaar, veranderen kinderen langzaam maar zeker in volwassenen. Deze transformatie gaat gepaard met grote veranderingen in het uiterlijk, het psychosociaal en cognitief functioneren en het gedrag. Een van de veranderingen die de adolescentie kenmerken is een toename van risicovol gedrag. Risicovol gedrag is gedrag dat mogelijk negatieve gevolgen heeft. Deze gevolgen kunnen vervelend of zelfs ernstig zijn. Niet alleen rapporteren adolescenten vergeleken met kinderen en volwassenen een grotere behoefte aan spanning en sensatie, ook het aantal behandelingen op de eerste-hulpafdeling van ziekenhuizen als gevolg van bijvoorbeeld ongelukken of overmatig alcoholgebruik piekt in de adolescentie en jongeren veroorzaken overlast of hebben problemen op school (Arnett, 1996; Steinberg, 2004).
