Samenvatting

Maculadegeneratie (MD) is een progressieve oogaandoening waarbij het centrale zien wordt aangetast door beschadigingen in de macula (gele vlek). In latere stadia daalt de gezichtsscherpte sterk, waardoor activiteiten zoals lezen, tv-kijken en autorijden moeilijk of onmogelijk worden. MD is de meest voorkomende oorzaak van slechtziendheid onder ouderen in West-Europa. Vanwege de toenemende vergrijzing, zal het aantal ouderen met maculadegeneratie snel toenemen. Naar schatting zullen in 2020 meer dan drie miljoen mensen in West-Europa lijden aan MD (Friedman et al., 2004). In Nederland wordt een toename verwacht van 54.500 mensen met MD in 2007 naar 77.900 in 2020 (Keunen et al., 2011).
