Deep brain stimulation – nieuwe behandeling voor ernstige hersenziekten

Samenvatting

Met deep brain stimulation (DBS) wordt elektrische stimulatie van de hersenen bedoeld als therapie bij ernstige hersenziekten waarbij alle andere therapieën niet (meer) werken. DBS is volledig geaccepteerd bij de behandeling van de ziekte van Parkinson en ernstige essentiële tremoren. Deze techniek wordt de laatste jaren in toenemende mate onderzocht als therapie bij treatment-resistant depressie, obsessief-compulsieve stoornis, epilepsie en verslaving. In deze bijdrage wordt de achtergrond van deze techniek geschetst, waarbij de historische en moderne bijdragen van dieronderzoek een belangrijke rol spelen. Hoewel nog veel translationeel onderzoek nodig is, lijkt DBS een zeer waardevolle uitbreiding van de behandelmethoden voor ernstige neurologische en neuropsychiatrische ziekten.
