5. Cognitieve therapie bij gegeneraliseerde angststoornis

Samenvatting

Patiënten met een gegeneraliseerde angststoornis worden aanhoudend gekweld door overmatige angst en onbeheersbaar gepieker. De stoornis is goed behandelbaar met behulp van cognitieve interventies die zich richten op de opvattingen die patiënten over hun gepieker hebben. In de behandeling leren zij met behulp van gedachteschema’s en gedragsexperimenten dat piekeren niet onbeheersbaar, noch schadelijk of gevaarlijk voor hen is (de zogenoemde negatieve opvattingen over piekeren). Vervolgens leren zij dat piekeren ook niet-helpend of zinvol is (de positieve opvattingen over piekeren). Tot slot leren zij alternatieve vaardigheden om met problemen om te gaan. Met deze therapievorm is het merendeel van de patiënten afdoende en blijvend geholpen. Tussen de 70 en 80 % van de patiënten is hersteld na de behandeling, ruim 90 % is ten minste betrouwbaar verbeterd. De resultaten blijven behouden tot tweeënhalf jaar na de behandeling.
