6. Cognitieve therapie bij paniekstoornis

Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk wordt beschreven hoe cognitieve therapie kan worden toegepast bij mensen met een paniekstoornis. Cognitieve therapie bij de paniekstoornis richt zich op de catastrofale manier waarop mensen de lichamelijke sensaties die bij paniek optreden interpreteren, waardoor er een irreële angst ontstaat. Hartkloppingen, duizeligheid of een onwerkelijk gevoel worden bijvoorbeeld geïnterpreteerd als tekenen van een hartaanval, flauwvallen of gek worden. In de behandeling wordt eerst de centrale catastrofale misinterpretatie vastgesteld. Die heeft de vorm van een ‘als…, dan…’-redenering. De cognitieve therapie is gericht op het disconfirmeren van deze interpretaties. Dit gebeurt met technieken als ‘informatie verzamelen’ en met behulp van gedragsexperimenten. De technieken worden aan de hand van voorbeelden uitgelegd. Tot slot komt aan bod hoe therapeuten met vaak voorkomende valkuilen in de behandeling kunnen omgaan en wordt de wetenschappelijke evidentie voor de behandeling op een rijtje gezet.
