Cognitieve functies van kinderen behandeld voor kanker

Van kinderen in de leeftijd tot 16 jaar die kanker hebben, overleeft tegenwoordig 70% de ziekte. Volgens schattingen heeft in de westerse wereld in het jaar 2010 één op de 250 volwassenen als kind kanker gehad. De vraag is nu of de biologische genezing ook gepaard gaat met een ongestoorde mentale ontwikkeling en goede kwaliteit van leven. Als de ziekte gelokaliseerd is in, of wanneer de behandeling aangrijpt op het centraal zenuwstelsel bestaat de kans op een verslechterd cognitief functioneren.

In dit artikel worden met name de potentiële, blijvende neuropsychologische gevolgen van een behandeling voor leukemie of een hersentumor besproken. Ruim de helft van de kinderen met kanker lijdt aan leukemie of heeft een hersentumor. Aan de orde komen zowel de literatuur als eigen onderzoek. Daarnaast bespreken we de mogelijke gevolgen van de verkregen cognitieve schade voor de schoolloopbaan en geven we richtlijnen voor de praktijk als de vraag wordt gesteld of leerproblemen in verband staan met de doorgemaakte behandeling.
