4. Cerebrale infecties, tumoren en intoxicaties

Samenvatting

Zowel infecties, tumoren als intoxicaties kunnen aanleiding geven tot het ontstaan van een hersenbeschadiging. Infecties en tumoren manifesteren zich vaak in de vorm van focale neurologische verschijnselen. Intoxicaties geven gewoonlijk aanleiding tot het ontstaan van een meer diffuse encefalopathie met cognitieve stoornissen, en gedrags- en karakterveranderingen. Infecties en tumoren manifesteren zich op iedere leeftijd, terwijl de toxische encefalopathie veel vaker wordt gezien bij volwassenen. Voor zowel infecties als tumoren geldt dat de symptomen van de hersenaandoening vaak een (vrij) acuut begin hebben, terwijl intoxicaties gewoonlijk een sluipend beloop hebben en aanleiding geven tot het ontstaan van een chronische cerebrale disfunctie.
