Antibiotica en luchtweginfecties: wat weet de leek?

Doel Dit onderzoek geeft inzicht in de opvattingen en kennis van de Nederlandse bevolking over antibiotica en luchtweginfecties.

Methoden We voerden een cross-sectionele internet-enquête uit onder een nationaal internetpanel dat uit 15.673 leden bestond. Hieruit werden 1248 geschikte personen uitgenodigd om de vragenlijst in te vullen, van wie er uiteindelijk 935 (75%) meededen. De vragenlijst bestond uit 20 vragen met subitems met betrekking tot kennis over en gebruik van antibiotica, en kennis over luchtweginfecties.

Resultaten Van de respondenten omschreef 44,6% antibiotica correct als werkzaam tegen bacteriën en niet tegen virussen. Bijna 60% van de respondenten veronderstelde dat antibiotica nodig zijn voor acute bronchitis. De vermeende noodzaak voor antibiotica voor luchtwegklachten varieerde van 6,5% voor hoest met helder slijm tot 46,2% voor hoest langer dan 2 weken.

Beschouwing Er bestaan publieke misvattingen over de werkzaamheid van en indicaties voor antibiotica. Bijna de helft van de respondenten achtte antibiotica werkzaam tegen virussen. Verwachtingen om antibiotica te krijgen waren hoger wanneer acute bronchitis werd genoemd dan wanneer de bij deze luchtweginfectie behorende symptomen werden genoemd. Willen we het antibioticagebruik voor luchtweginfecties in Nederland (nog) adequater maken, dan is het essentieel dat we rekening houden met de opvattingen van de algemene bevolking.
