Alexithymie bij depressieve ouderen: een relevante persoonlijkheidstrek?

Samenvatting

Alexithymie (affectieve-cognitieve emotieregulatie) zou belangrijk kunnen zijn om affectieve problematiek bij ouderen te begrijpen. In deze studie wordt nagegaan of alexithymie (i) de kenmerken vertoont van een stabiele persoonlijkheidstrek , (ii) onafhankelijk is van andere persoonlijkheidstrekken en (iii) geassocieerd is met de ernst en het beloop van depressie. Alexithymie werd bij ouderen met een (sub)klinische depressieve stoornis na intake (T1) en na drie maanden (T2) gemeten met de Bermond Vorst Alexithymie Vragenlijst (BVAV). De resultaten tonen aan dat alexithymie bij depressieve ouderen als een stabiele persoonlijkheidstrek opgevat kan worden die onafhankelijk is van de persoonlijkheidstrekken volgens het Vijf Factoren Model (VFM). Alexithymie blijkt geen voorspeller voor het beloop van depressie. Geconcludeerd wordt dat alexithymie mogelijk relevant is voor de diagnostiek en behandeling van depressie bij ouderen en dat vervolgonderzoek wenselijk is.
