Samenvatting

Een stemmingsstoornis moet onderscheiden worden van respectievelijk depressiviteit of euforie als symptoom van een andere stoornis of van een (depressieve) persoonlijkheid of persoonlijkheidsstoornis. Voor bespreking van de differentiële diagnostiek en etiologie van stemmingsstoornissen verwijzen we naar deel 1, hoofdstuk 5 van dit handboek (Nolen & Koerselman, 2000). In dit hoofdstuk worden behandelprotocollen voor unipolaire depressieve patiënten en voor bipolaire patiënten besproken. Tevens wordt aandacht besteed aan de onderhoudsbehandeling van zowel de unipolaire als de bipolaire stoornis. Meestal ligt bij behandelprotocollen of -strategieën voor de unipolaire depressieve stoornis het accent op óf de psychologische óf de biologische behandelmogelijkheden. Bij de bipolaire stoornis daarentegen neemt de farmacotherapie meestal de belangrijkste plaats in.
