11 De normale zwangerschap: de zwangere vrouw

Samenvatting

De zwangerschap is een periode waarin vanuit de foetoplacentaire eenheid het moederlijk organisme zodanig wordt veranderd, dat enerzijds de omstandigheden voor groei en ontwikkeling van het kind optimaal zijn en anderzijds dat de moeder voorbereid wordt op de baring en de lactatieperiode nadien. Bij deze veranderingen worden de cardiovasculaire en metabole reserves van de moeder aangesproken en wordt ook het bewegingsapparaat in toenemende mate belast. Bij voldoende reserves – zoals meestal het geval is – dient men de zwangerschap te beschouwen als een variant van gezond zijn, waarbij van het moederlijk lichaam een extra inspanning wordt verwacht, die het normaal gesproken goed kan opbrengen. Door kennis van de fysiologische veranderingen in het moederlijk lichaam kan men de klachten die door die veranderingen kunnen ontstaan, beter interpreteren en dus ook onderscheiden van symptomen die relevant zijn bij het ontstaan van zwangerschapscomplicaties.
