Whiplash en posttraumatische stress–stoornis

Abstract

Verkeersongelukken leiden vaker dan in de klinische praktijk wordt onderkend tot psychische klachten. Posttraumatische stress–stoornis komt naar schatting bij ten minste een kwart van de verkeersslachtoffers met lichamelijk letsel voor. Waarschijnlijk is dit ook het geval bij patiënten met chronische whiplashklachten. De psychotherapeutische behandeling van mensen met chronische whiplashklachten en een posttraumatische stress–stoornis dient in eerste instantie gericht te zijn op traumaverwerking en niet op de chronische pijnklachten. Ter illustratie van deze stelling wordt een gevalsbeschrijving gegeven.
