After almost 100 years of separation between the fields of intellectual disability and psychiatry, there is a growing mutual interest. Nowadays more attention is being paid to the psychological problems and psychiatric disorders in people with intellectual disability. Mental health centres specialised in intellectual disability are founded and psychotherapeutic treatment possibilities are increasing. This article provides an overview of psychotherapeutic treatment options for adults with mild intellectual disability and explains how a psychotherapist can get into contact with intellectually disabled adults with the help of knowledge of their cognitive, social, emotional, and personality developmental age. …
