6. Structurele en functionele adaptaties in de lumbale spieren tijdens remissie van recurrente lagerugpijn

Inleiding

Lagerugpijn is een heel frequent voorkomende pathologie. Onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat één op de drie mensen in België op een zeker ogenblik lagerugpijn ervaart (Skovron et al., 1994). Desondanks wordt aspecifieke lagerugpijn vaak beschouwd als een goedaardige aandoening, aangezien lagerugpijn in de meeste gevallen een ‘acuut’ verloop kent en slechts in een beperkt percentage ‘chronisch’ blijkt. Een acute episode van lagerugpijn herstelt meestal spontaan in de eerste dagen of weken na het ontstaan van de klachten. Maar, dit is niet het volledige verhaal. Na een eerste acute episode van lagerugpijn is de kans immers zeer groot op terugval, of recurrentie van de lagerugpijn (Hestbaek, Leboeuf-Yde & Manniche, 2003). De kans op terugval in het eerste jaar na een episode varieert van 44 tot 78 procent.
