14. Slaapgerelateerde ademhalingsstoornissen

Samenvatting

Slaapgerelateerde ademhalingsstoornissen worden gekarakteriseerd door een gestoorde ademhaling tijdens de slaap. Patiënten met slaapgerelateerde ademhalingsstoornissen klagen vaak over de kwaliteit van de slaap en over het functioneren overdag als gevolg van de verstoorde slaapconditie. Dit hoofdstuk behandelt het obstructieve slaapapneusyndroom (OSAS) en de rol van de tandarts in de herkenning en de behandeling van deze slaapgerelateerde ademhalingsstoornis. OSAS wordt gekenmerkt door het herhaald optreden van obstructies van de hogere luchtweg. Het opheffen van deze obstructies gaat vaak gepaard met een luid snurkgeluid en ontwaken. Tegenwoordig worden mandibulair repositieapparaten (MRA’s) voorgeschreven voor milde en matige OSAS-patiënten. Het doel van het MRA is het vergroten van de luchtweg en/of het reduceren van de neiging tot dichtvallen. De primaire taken van een tandarts zijn onder andere het uitgebreid tandheelkundig screenen van de patiënt voorafgaand aan de MRA-behandeling, de selectie van het MRA, en het vervaardigen en de aanpassing ervan.
