Samenvatting

Het skelet is het samenstel van botten, kraakbeen en bindweefsel dat het lichaam ondersteunt en veel kwetsbare organen beschermt. Het voornaamste weefsel waaruit het skelet is opgebouwd, is botweefsel. Het harde, inerte uiterlijk en het hoge gehalte aan anorganische bestanddelen leidden in het verleden tot de onjuiste veronderstelling dat bot, zeker bij volwassenen, statisch is. Dit is echter geenszins het geval.
