4. Secundaire cariës

Samenvatting

In het voorgaande hoofdstuk zijn cariëslaesies steeds beschreven als primaire laesies van tandweefsel dat nog niet eerder door cariës was aangetast. Soms leidt het proces tot cavitatie, en verdere voortgang is dan alleen nog te stoppen door prepareren en restaureren. Die behandeling sluit echter niet uit dat opnieuw een laesie ontstaat in het aangrenzende tandweefsel. In dat geval spreekt men van secundaire cariës. Treft men cariës aan naast een vulling dan staat overigens niet vast dat het om een nieuw proces gaat. Het is voorstelbaar (en in de praktijk geen zeldzaamheid) dat restanten van carieus tandweefsel bij het prepareren zijn achtergelaten en al dan niet de kern vormen van opnieuw voortschrijdende cariës.
