Samenvatting

Schildkliercarcinomen zijn zeldzame maligne tumoren. Slechts 5 % van de palpabele schildkliernoduli waarmee een patiënt zich bij de huisarts presenteert is maligne. Cytologische schildklierpunctie en echografie van de hals zijn de belangrijkste diagnostische onderzoeken voor patiënten met een schildkliernodus. De conventionele behandeling van patiënten met schildkliercarcinomen bestaat uit een totale thyroïdectomie eventueel gevolgd door een behandeling met radioactief jodium. De prognose van patiënten met schildkliercarcinomen is afhankelijk van het histologische type en de uitgebreidheid van de ziekte. De meerderheid van de patiënten geneest echter van de ziekte. In deze bijdrage wordt een overzicht gegeven van de diagnostiek en de behandeling van verschillende vormen van schildkliercarcinoom specifiek gericht op de Nederlandse praktijk.
