Psychotherapie bij trauma en verlies ten gevolge van een lichamelijke ziekte

Abstract

Recent onderzoek wijst uit dat de confrontatie met een lichamelijke ziekte en de soms ingrijpende medische behandeling ervan een psychotraumatische ervaring kan zijn voor de patiënt en zijn naasten. Bovendien kan ziekte in verschillende opzichten verlies betekenen, bijvoorbeeld: verlies van gezondheid, werk of sociale status. In dit artikel worden de recente onderzoeksbevindingen op dit gebied beschreven, waarbij de nadruk ligt op het onderzoek naar posttraumatische stressstoornis bij lichamelijke ziekte. Diagnostiek en behandeling krijgen aandacht. Onderzoek naar specifieke interventies voor deze doelgroep blijkt schaars. Hoewel effectieve interventies zijn ontwikkeld, lijkt terughoudendheid bij het aanbieden van professionele psychotherapeutische hulp geboden.
