Preventie van allergie bij kinderen

Samenvatting

De recente toename van de prevalentie van allergische ziekten heeft een zoektocht doen ontstaan naar de factoren die de kans op allergie bepalen, in de hoop dat beïnvloeding van deze factoren leidt tot daling van de allergieprevalentie. Een rookvrije omgeving voor het (aanstaande) kind is een belangrijke effectief geachte maatregel. Uitsluitend borstvoeding gedurende ten minste vier maanden kan om veel redenen aangeraden worden, maar het preventieve effect op allergie is niet goed aangetoond. Hoewel meta-analysen aangeven dat als borstvoeding niet (meer) mogelijk is, hypoallergene kunstvoeding geschikt is als alternatief, is het bewijs daarvoor zwak. Voor alle preventieve voedingsmaatregelen lijkt bovendien te gelden dat ze weinig of geen effect hebben op latere uitingen van allergie. Bij de voorlichting over preventie aan (aanstaande) ouders moet aan deze beperkingen aandacht worden besteed.
