This book is the first to be dedicated to the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems (AAC) with those who have severe communication disabilities arising from an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are a number of books on autism and communication disability (e.g., Wetherby and Prizant 2007). There are also books on AAC, with the most encyclopedic being that of Beukelman and Mirenda’s (2005). And there is a rich journal literature on the various ways AAC has been used successfully with those who have a diagnosis of a disorder on the autistic spectrum.
