17. Onderricht: leren, geheugen en intelligentie

Abstract

In vroeger tijden werden de stamoudsten beschouwd als leermeesters en bronnen van wijsheid. Tegenwoordig is er weinig respect meer voor de ervaringen opgedaan tijdens een lang leven en wordt in brede kring ten onrechte aangenomen dat het leervermogen en de geheugenfunctie afnemen als men ouder wordt. Het is in de huidige maatschappij echter zo dat ouderen nieuwe vaardigheden moeten aanleren, aangezien de snelle vooruitgang van de techniek bijna dagelijks, zo lijkt het, ingrijpende wijzigingen veroorzaakt op het gebied van de communicatie, het transport, het geldwezen en de recreatie. Naarmate waarden en normen veranderen, verandert ook het maatschappelijk aanzien van de vaardigheden die mensen bezitten. Dit vereist het leren van nieuwe dingen.
