Samenvatting

Vrouwelijke artsen neigen naar perfectionisme en zijn vaak streng voor zichzelf. Onze innerlijke criticus wint het van ons zorgzame deel. (Zelf)kritiek doet pijn en zet ons gevaar- en jaagsysteem aan. Zelfcompassie is een werkzaam antidotum: het activeert ons zorgsysteem en brengt ons in een kalme, flexibele, ondersteunende modus. We zijn vriendelijker voor onszelf en komen beter voor onszelf op. We mogen ruimte voor onszelf nemen en fouten maken. We zorgen beter voor onszelf en kunnen daardoor beter voor anderen zorgen. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek onder artsen laat zien dat zelfcompassie onder andere perfectionisme, schuldgevoel en burn-out doet afnemen en zelfvertrouwen, welzijn en veerkracht doet toenemen. In dit hoofdstuk leer je hoe en waarom zelfcompassie werkt. Je krijgt handvatten om jezelf te behandelen als je beste vriendin en om te gaan met moeilijke gevoelens.
