The term “adolescence” can incite a plethora of emotions and subsequent adjectives. It can be a time of excitement and opportunity. It can also be a time of turmoil and confusion. For better or worse, adolescence is most certainly a time of discovery and change. This extended developmental period, typically spanning between ages 10 and 20, encompasses numerous changes in biological, psychological and social functioning. If this were not challenging enough, individuals must also navigate this period within the context of cultural and social norms. For this reason, most would agree that growing up in the 21st century is more difficult than ever before. …
