3. Mechanische plaquebeheersing

Abstract

Persoonlijke mondhygiëne heeft de afgelopen decennia steeds meer aandacht gekregen. Mensen reinigen hun tanden om een aantal redenen: voor een fris gevoel, hun zelfvertrouwen, een mooie lach, en/of om ziekte en een slechte adem te voorkomen. De meest gebruikte methode om plaque mechanisch te verwijderen is tandenpoetsen. Het verwijderen van microbiële plaque is de basis voor de preventie en behandeling van parodontitis (Choo et al., 2001). Er is voldoende bewijs dat tandenpoetsen en aanvullende mechanische reiniging een gewenste plaquecontrole bewerkstelligen. Voorwaarde is dat het op de juiste wijze en met de goede frequentie wordt uitgevoerd (Van der Weijden en Hioe, 2005).
