The risk of infection and inflammation is increased in immunocompromised patients and this also holds true for pediatric oncology patients. Due to (chemo-)therapy-induced neutropaenia, these patients are more dependent on the non-cellular complement system as a defense against pathogens. Deficiency of the complement component MBL is associated with an increased risk of infections in these patients. Previous work has shown that administration of plasma-derived MBL (pdMBL) to these patients leads to normal MBL plasma levels.
