20 jaar Neuropraxis: Is het lichaam-geestprobleem al opgelost?

Samenvatting

Het lichaam-geestprobleem houdt de gemoederen al jaren bezig. Ook in het allereerste nummer van Neuropraxis in 1997 werd er een artikel aan gewijd. Dat artikel, ook van mijn hand, ging over de verschillende posities die filosofen innemen inzake dit onderwerp. In de 20 jaar daaropvolgend zijn er nieuwe concepten geïntroduceerd, zoals embodied cognition. In dit artikel bespreek ik, naast embodied cognition, de neurofilosofische wending in de studie naar het bewustzijn, zoals neuronale correlaten van bewustzijn en de relatie tussen hersenen en wat wij onder visuele ervaring verstaan.

Direct perception is hier niet een psychologische theorie, zoals de theorie van Gibson [13]. Het is een vorm van common sense die zegt dat we met onze zintuigen direct in contact zijn met de werkelijkheid en dat wij met name niet op basis van zintuiglijke indrukken afleiden dat er, bijvoorbeeld, een auto voor onze deur staat. Hiermee is echter niet gezegd dat de theorie van Gibson niet goed verenigbaar is met deze common sense opvatting.
