Geheugenproblemen bij volwassenen met attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Samenvatting

Verschillende studies hebben aangetoond dat volwassenen met attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) beperkingen hebben in verschillende aspecten van aandacht en executieve controle. Geheugenfuncties zijn tot nu toe echter zelden onderzocht bij volwassenen met ADHD. Dit is verrassend, gezien het feit dat het goed functioneren van verschillende aspecten van het geheugen afhankelijk is van een intacte executieve controle. Dit artikel presenteert een samenvatting van verschillende studies naar problemen met het geheugen bij volwassenen met ADHD en bespreekt de klinische implicaties. Daarbij worden de effecten van stimulerende medicatie op geheugenfuncties bij volwassenen met ADHD in kaart gebracht. Volwassenen met ADHD bleken aanzienlijke beperkingen te hebben in geheugenfuncties die gerelateerd zijn aan executieve controle, zoals het inprenten van nieuwe informatie, het discrimineren van bronnen van informatie en het prospectief geheugen. Volwassenen met ADHD die behandeld werden met stimulerende medicatie vertoonden betere geheugenfuncties dan patiënten die geen medicatie gebruikten, maar hadden nog steeds meer beperkingen op dit gebied dan gezonde controlepersonen. Deze studies bevestigen de aanwezigheid van geheugenbeperkingen bij volwassenen met ADHD en benadrukken de impact van deze beperkingen op het dagelijks functioneren. Farmacologische behandeling met stimulerende middelen lijkt een positieve invloed te hebben op het geheugen, maar kan het geheugen niet normaliseren. Aanvullende behandelingen, zoals cognitieve gedragstherapie, zijn daarom noodzakelijk.
