Zanamivir en oseltamivir zijn nieuwe vertegenwoordigers van de groep neuraminidaseremmers. Oseltamivir is in het najaar van 2002 in Nederland geïntroduceerd. Deze medicijnen remmen het enzym neuraminidase van het influenza-A- en -B-virus. Virale neuraminidase bevordert de penetratie van het virus in de epitheelcellen en de afgifte van nieuw gevormde viruspartikels.
