Langetermijneffecten van radiotherapie bij de behandeling van borstkanker

Samenvatting

Radiotherapie is een essentieel onderdeel van de behandeling bij patiënten met borstkanker. Mede door het gebruik van radiotherapie is de prognose van patiënten met borstkanker aanzienlijk verbeterd. De keerzijde van de verbeterde prognose is dat meer patiënten risico’s lopen op het ontwikkelen van schade veroorzaakt door de behandeling. De schade als gevolg van de behandeling wordt onderverdeeld in acute en late schade. De laatste openbaart zich soms tot vele jaren na de behandeling. In dit artikel worden een aantal vooral late bijwerkingen als gevolg van radiotherapie bij de behandeling van borstkanker besproken.
