Koolhydraatarme voeding bij diabetes mellitus type 2

Samenvatting

Van Hoek-Ottenkamp WG. Koolhydraatarme voeding bij diabetes mellitus type 2. Huisarts Wet 2017;60(12):660-2.
Een patiënte, met langdurig diabetes mellitus type 2 en fors overgewicht, valt af met een koolhydraatarm dieet. Zij volgt tweemaal een periode een koolhydraatarm (KH-arm) dieet, afgewisseld met koolhydraatbeperkte (KH-beperkte) voeding. Een jaar na de laatste periode KH-arm dieet heeft zij een gewichtsreductie van 7% behouden, een gelijke glykemische instelling met 34% minder eenheden insuline, een lagere systolische bloeddruk en een lager LDL-cholesterol. Ook in de literatuur vinden we goede resultaten van een KH-arm dieet op gewicht, glykemische instelling, insulineresistentie en lipidenspectrum. Bij een KH-arm dieet wordt de eetlust minder, waardoor het makkelijker vol te houden is. Langdurig KH-arm eten geeft een risico op vitaminen- en vezeltekorten. Een afwisseling van een korte periode KH-arm dieet met KH-beperkte voeding lijkt het een goede manier om een gemotiveerde patiënt met diabetes mellitus type 2 te behandelen.
