Samenvatting

Leeftijd is een getal. Niet meer, niet minder. We horen het vaak en inderdaad het is zo. Doch, de Covid-19-pandemie heeft duidelijk onder de aandacht gebracht dat leeftijd gepaard gaat met veranderingen die er wel degelijk toe doen. Door de veroudering van de bevolking was de afgelopen pandemie historisch uniek en bracht heel duidelijk de thema’s van epidemiologie, demografie en klinische uitdagingen voor vandaag en morgen scherp in beeld. In dit inleidend hoofdstuk laten we diverse feiten en reflecties over deze thema’s de revue passeren.
