Inleiding

Het syndroom van Sjögren (SS) kan primair en secundair voorkomen. Van een primair syndroom van Sjögren (pSS) wordt gesproken als het syndroom zich uit in een betrokkenheid van de ogen (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) en speekselklieren (droge mond (xerostomie), zwelling van de speekselklieren). Bij 30-40% van deze patiënten is tevens sprake van systemische manifestaties; vermoeidheid komt zelfs voor bij 70-90% van de patiënten. Van sSS wordt gesproken als daarnaast sprake is van een andere auto-immuunziekte, zoals reumatoïde artitis (RA) of systemische lupus erythematosus (SLE).
