Abstract

Nauwelijks is een baby geboren of hij heeft zijn eerste rapportcijfer te pakken: de Apgar-score. Een score die aangeeft hoe het met de baby gaat. Hoe lager de score des te slechter de toestand van de pasgeborene. Een lage Apgar-score wordt meestal geïnterpreteerd als een aanwijzing voor perinatale asfyxie, dat wil zeggen een toestand waarbij er sprake is van hypoxemie en cerebrale ischemie, en vervolgens direct gekoppeld aan een hoge kans op ontwikkelingsproblemen zoals spasticiteit en stoornissen in de aandachtsregulatie. Maar is het werkelijk zo dat een lage Apgar-score en asfyxie gelijkwaardige begrippen zijn? En hoe zit het met een lage Apgar-score en/of asfyxie en de kans op ontwikkelings-problemen?
