Samenvatting

Sinds 2012 is het aantal aanmeldingen bij genderklinieken sterk gestegen. Deze stijging loopt parallel met een sterk toegenomen media-aandacht voor ‘genderdiversiteit’, de notie dat er meer identiteiten zijn dan (trans)man en (trans)vrouw. Mensen komen ook uit voor hun non-binaire identiteit of geven aan geen genderidentiteit te hebben. Er is enerzijds sprake van normalisering (verminderde stigmatisering), anderzijds van groeiend bewustzijn van de ontwikkelingsrisico’s en maatschappelijk achterstelling van transgender personen ten gevolge van minderheidsstress. Deze ontwikkelingen leidden tot een groeiend onderzoeksveld en nieuwe inzichten, bijvoorbeeld over het samengaan van genderdysforie met psychische klachten of stoornissen. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op al deze aspecten, met het oog op het beter toerusten van behandelaren in de seksuologische en psychische zorg. Deze kennis kan bijdragen aan het signaleren van genderproblematiek bij patiënten en zal de behandelaar ook beter in staat stellen een genderdiverse patiënt adequaat te behandelen of door te verwijzen.
