Abstract

Elektrofysiologisch onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat onze hersenen zijn uitgerust met een mechanisme voor het herkennen van fouten. Op het moment dat mensen onder tijdsdruk een verkeerde reactie op een stimulus geven, laat het eeg een scherpe negatieve potentiaal zien: de error-related negativity. Deze potentiaal weerspiegelt waarschijnlijk een interactie tussen het dopaminesysteem en de mediale frontale cortex. De amplitude van de error-related negativity is abnormaal in verscheidene neuropsychiatrische stoornissen, waaronder obsessief-compulsieve stoornissen, het Gilles-de-la-Tourette-syndroom, schizofrenie en de ziekte van Parkinson. Dit levert mogelijk interessante aanwijzingen op voor de theorievorming over de functionele en neurale oorzaak van deze aandoeningen.
