Seksueel verlangen en opwinding: een psychofysiologisch perspectief op seksuele motivatie

Abstract

Gaat seksueel verlangen vooraf aan seksuele opwinding? In het gangbare seksuele-responsmodel worden seksueel verlangen en seksuele opwinding onderscheiden als aparte en opeenvolgende fasen. In dit artikel beargumenteren wij dat dit model niet strookt met moderne incentive motivatietheorie en met de huidige kennis over emotie- en motivatiemechanismen. Het samenspel van de emotie- en motivatiecircuits in het brein, en de rol van dopamine bij motivatie worden besproken. De verwevenheid van emotie en motivatie wordt geïllustreerd aan de hand van psychofysiologische studies naar seksuele actiegeneigdheid. We concluderen dat een incentive motivatievisie op seksueel verlangen behulpzaam kan zijn bij het denken over stoornissen in de seksuele motivatie.
