13. Fluoride

Samenvatting

In de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw werd fluoride reeds door een aantal artsen en tandartsen aanbevolen om tanden harder te maken en meer weerstand te geven tegen tandcariës. Het toenemende tandbederf werd door hen gezien als een fluoridetekort dat veroorzaakt werd door het gebruik van steeds meer geraffineerde producten, die nog slechts weinig fluoride bevatten. Zij baseerden hun theorie onder andere op het feit dat fluoride was aangetroffen in gebitselementen, eerst in fossiele mammoettanden maar later ook in recente tanden. In 1907 werd de eerste fluoridetandpasta geïntroduceerd.
