Achtergrond

Ontkenning is een bekend fenomeen in de klinischoncologische praktijk, maar er is weinig bekend over het effect: is ontkenning gunstig of juist ongunstig? Wij onderzochten de sociale en emotionele gevolgen van ontkenning.

Methode

Wij interviewden 195 patiënten met nieuwe longkanker maximaal viermaal in de acht maanden volgend op de diagnose. Met behulp van een viertal klinische meetinstrumenten maten wij bij hen de mate van ontkenning, het sociaal en emotioneel functioneren en de mate van angst en depressie.

Resultaten

Patiënten met een stabiel matig niveau van ontkenning of met toenemende ontkenning in de loop van het ziekteproces rapporteerden betere uitkomsten op sociaal gebied, minder angst en depressie en betere kwaliteit van leven dan patiënten met een stabiel laag niveau van ontkenning.

Conclusie

Een bepaalde mate van ontkenning kan een gunstig effect hebben op het sociaal en emotioneel functioneren van longkankerpatiënten.
