13. De partiële prothese

Inleiding

Een partiële prothese indiceren en vervaardigen bij een patiënt met een gereduceerde dentitie lijkt gemakkelijker dan het is. Dat komt omdat steeds alternatieve behandelingen overwogen moeten worden en omdat er niet alleen met biomechanische factoren, maar ook met biologische en psychosociale factoren rekening moet worden gehouden. In dit hoofdstuk wordt allereerst de indicatie van de partiële prothese besproken; vervolgens wordt nader op de hiervoor genoemde drie factoren ingegaan, waarbij de nadruk ligt op de praktische consequenties ervan. De partiële frameprothese komt primair aan de orde en in mindere mate de partiële plaatprothese, omdat de eerste in het algemeen de voorkeur heeft vanwege betere krachtenopvang, gunstigere retentiemogelijkheden en minder plaqueretentie. In het vervolg van dit hoofdstuk wordt de term ‘partiële prothese’ dan ook steeds gebruikt voor een partiële prothese met een in metaal gegoten constructie als basis.
