De overgang van werk naar pensioen: Ervaren steun van volwassen kinderen

Samenvatting

Achtergrond

Voor veel mensen is pensionering een levensgebeurtenis die gepaard gaat met grote veranderingen. Steun van de kinderen kan mogelijk helpen om de overgang van werk naar pensioen soepel te laten verlopen. Inzichten in intergenerationele steun bij de pensionering zijn echter schaars. In hoeverre ervaren ouders steun van hun kinderen in de transitie van werk naar pensioen en met welke factoren hangt dit samen?

Methode

De analyses zijn gebaseerd op panel data verzameld onder gepensioneerden in Nederland (N = 709). De informatie over ervaren steun van de kinderen bij pensionering werd verzameld tijdens ronde 3 in 2011.

Resultaten

Een minderheid van de gepensioneerde ouders ervaart steun van de kinderen in de transitie van werk naar pensioen. Gepensioneerden die geen partner hebben en gepensioneerden die niet goed financieel kunnen rondkomen ervaren relatief veel steun van de kinderen bij de pensionering. Dit geldt ook voor gepensioneerden die regelmatig oppassen op de kleinkinderen en die hun kinderen vaak helpen met praktische zaken.

Conclusie

Kinderen geven voornamelijk steun bij de pensionering als er sprake is van uitwisseling van steun en lijken slechts in beperkte mate te reageren op mogelijke indicatoren van behoefte aan steun rondom pensionering.
