De oorzaken van individuele verschillen in stabiliteit en verandering van gedragsproblemen

Abstract

Onderzoek naar individuele verschillen in gedragsproblemen bij onderzoekspopulaties uit verschillende landen en op verschillende leeftijden toont aan dat genen en omgeving een rol spelen. Verder toont longitudinaal onderzoek aan dat gedragsproblemen stabiel zijn over de tijd en dat deze stabiliteit ook wordt verklaard door genetische en omgevingsinvloeden. Het onderzoeksmateriaal is echter schaars en het tijdsinterval tussen de metingen van gedragsproblemen in eerdere onderzoeken om uitspraken te kunnen doen over stabiliteit en verandering is klein (ongeveer 2 à 3 jaar). Vooral door dit kleine tijdsinterval blijft de vraag bestaan of deze stabiliteit in gedragsproblemen gevonden wordt over de gehele kindertijd van 3 tot 12 jaar. Om meer inzicht te verkrijgen in oorzaken en onderliggende mechanismen van stabiliteit van gedragsproblemen tijdens het brede tijdsinterval van 3 tot 12 jaar vindt op de afdeling Biologische Psychologie van de Vrije Universiteit een grootschalig onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van gedrag en gedragsproblemen plaats. Het longitudinale karakter van het onderzoek biedt de mogelijkheid de ontwikkeling van gedragsproblemen in kaart te brengen en inzicht te verkrijgen in de oorzaken van stabiliteit en verandering tijdens de ontwikkeling van jonge kinderen (3 jaar) tot kinderen in de prepuberale/puberale leeftijd (12 jaar).

Gedrag van adoptiekinderen wordt vergeleken met gedrag van hun adoptieouders en zo mogelijk met gedrag van hun biologische ouders. Een grote overlap tussen gedrag van het adoptiekind en zijn biologische ouders of een kleine overlap tussen gedrag van het adoptiekind en zijn adoptieouders, wijst op invloed van genetisch materiaal.
