De eetbuistoornis

Samenvatting

De eetbuistoornis of binge eating disorder wordt momenteel nog niet beschouwd als een aparte diagnostische categorie binnen de DSM-IV. Ze behoort tot de categorie ‘eetstoornis niet anderszins omschreven’ (EDNOS). Het hoofdkenmerk is de aanwezigheid van eetbuien, waarbij compenseergedrag ontbreekt. Er is een belangrijke link met obesitas. Een aantal kenmerken, zoals een opmerkelijke psychiatrische comorbiditeit (voornamelijk depressie), weinig zelfvertrouwen en problemen in het psychosociaal functioneren, zijn gemeenschappelijk met andere eetstoornissen. Het stellen van een tijdige en eenduidige diagnose is niet eenvoudig, maar van groot belang voor de indicatie van een gepaste behandeling. Hierin kan de huisarts een belangrijke rol vervullen. Cognitieve gedragstherapie is de meest onderzochte behandelmethode en wordt algemeen aanvaard als de voorkeursbehandeling.
